The Port of Los Angeles logged an 11.35 percent increase in monthly container counts during the first three months of 2016, marking the port's busiest first quarter on record, port officials announced earlier this week.

The port handled 2,030,982 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) January through March 2016, up from 1,823,954 TEUs in the same period a year ago.

The quarter's growth was "significant and encouraging," Port Executive Director Gene Seroka said in a press release.

"The feedback we are receiving from cargo owners and exporters is that the port is delivering on speed, efficiency, cost and service," he said. "Our terminal operators and supply chain partners are working with us to continuously improve and optimize operations."

The two largest container vessels currently calling at North American ports — the CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin and the Maersk Edmonton — are scheduled to return to the Port of Los Angeles concurrently next week, as the port continues to handle megaships and move larger container volumes per call, port officials said.

Total March 2016 volumes registered at 612,863 TEUs, down 22.6 percent compared with March 2015's volumes, which surged after congestion issues were resolved following a labor dispute.
