Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards yesterday announced a $1.8 billion state-of-the-art container facility will be built at the Port of New Orleans.
Dubbed the Louisiana International Terminal, the project to build the new facility is a public-private effort between the state, the port and two global maritime companies — New Jersey-based Ports America and Switzerland-based Mediterranean Shipping Co., port officials said in a press release.
To be located on the Lower Mississippi River in St. Bernard Parish, the facility will be able to serve vessels of all sizes, increasing the port’s import and export capacity. Once operational, the terminal will handle 2 million 20-foot equivalent units annually, port officials said.
"The powerful impact of this world-class logistics asset will benefit not only residents and businesses in south Louisiana — it will benefit advanced manufacturing, agribusiness and energy workers all across the state,” said Edwards.
The project is in the design and permitting phase under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ environmental review process. Construction is slated to begin in 2025, with the first berth to open in 2028. The terminal will be built on 1,200 acres that the port purchased in 2020, with room for value-added services and warehousing facilities.
Ports America and Mediterranean Shipping have committed $800 million for the project. Other funds will come from the port itself and federal and state funding sources, port officials said. The partners will also operate the terminal once it opens.
The port is served by the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad and the following Class Is: BNSF Railway Co., CN, CSX, Kansas City Southern, Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad.
