Port of Toronto logs more than 2 million tons of cargo in 2021

The Port of Toronto announced it handled 2,295,815 metric tons of cargo in 2021, a 4% increase from 2020's mark.

The port has surpassed 2 million tons of cargo for the fifth consecutive year. Most of the cargo handled in 2021 was cement, steel, sugar and salt imports, port officials said in a press release. Cement cargo reached a 19-year high of more than 734,000 tons, while steel imports reached an 18-year high of 185,000 tons.

Nearly 200 cargo vessels visited the port last year. Aggregate tonnage doubled year over year, hitting 215,232 tons of supplies for various land erosion projects led by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

The port also processed 572,683 tons of sugar from Central and South America and 583,425 tons of salt. Overall, the port recorded 4,365 tons of container services tonnage, a 15% increase compared with 2020's level.

“In 2021, the port continued to provide a reliable trade gateway for the transportation of goods to the Greater Toronto Area, connecting Toronto to marine ports around the world while much of our transportation sector experienced delays,” said PortsToronto CEO Geoffrey Wilson in a press release.
