The Port of Virginia this week announced it has finalized terms of an agreement to buy five ship-to-shore cranes from Shanghai-based Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd.

The $61.6 million purchase is part of an equipment renewal plan to modernize the port’s container terminals, port officials said in a press release. The cranes will be able to accommodate high-volume container vessels up to 26 containers wide.

The cranes are slated for delivery in December 2024, with two of going to Virginia International Gateway and the remaining three going to the South Berth at Norfolk International Terminals. This purchase will round up the total number of ship-to-shore cranes at the port to 30, port officials said.

Each crane measures 170 feet above the dock.

"These cranes will ensure our lift capacity, berth productivity and the ability to handle multiple ultra-large container vessels simultaneously at our primary container terminals," said Virginia Port Authority CEO and Executive Director Stephen Edwards.

The port is served by CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and Norfolk and Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad Co.
