The final payout in a series of federal reimbursements for the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project has been disbursed to the South Carolina Ports Authority, completing a $21.28 million allocation from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Charleston District’s fiscal-year 2025 work plan.

The funding milestone formally concludes the $580 million deepening project, which made Charleston Harbor the deepest harbor on the U.S. East Coast at 52 feet, SC Ports officials said in a press release. The deepening project strengthened SC Ports' competitiveness by allowing the largest container ships to call the port at any time by removing tidal restrictions and improving efficiency.

The project required moving over 40 million cubic yards of materials. The project has been in planning since 2011, with construction beginning in 2018 and concluding in 2023. Funding came from state and federal sources.

"Infrastructure projects like the Harbor Deepening Project are massive undertakings that require collaboration and teamwork with our state and federal leaders," SC Ports President and CEO Barbara Melvin said.

The Port of Charleston features daily express intermodal and merchandise rail services through CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway.
