South Carolina (SC) Ports set a May record for containers handled at the Port of Charleston, marking the third consecutive month of record volumes.
The port logged 230,870 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) at its Wando Welch, North Charleston and Hugh K. Leatherman terminals, up 36% year over year as cargo continues to boom globally, SC Ports officials said in a news release.
The number of pier containers — which account for cargo boxes of any size — reached 128,519 in May, up 31.2%.
SC Ports registered nearly 2.32 million TEUs in fiscal-year 2021, which ran from July 1, 2020, through May 31, 2021, up 6.85% from the prior fiscal year. Its ports handled 1.29 million pier containers, up 5%.
While the strong comparisons are aided by low volumes in May 2020 due to the pandemic, current traffic shows a rebound in the booming Southeast market, SC Ports officials said.
