South Carolina Ports yesterday opened the Cosgrove Avenue extension and pedestrian bridge in North Charleston, a key fixture of the port's Navy Base Intermodal Facility.
The project extends Cosgrove Avenue above the port's rail yard, allowing trains to move to and from the facility without impeding vehicular and pedestrian traffic, port officials said in a press release.
The Navy Base Intermodal Facility, which is in development, will move cargo more efficiently from the Port of Charleston to inland markets. Palmetto Railways, which is a division of the South Carolina Department of Commerce, plans to build and operate the facility on a 118-acre site located at the former Charleston Naval Complex.
The port currently offers customers daily intermodal and merchandise rail services through CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway Co. Part of the development process involves efforts to mitigate disruption to the community.
The facility is part of a larger redevelopment on the former Navy Base, which includes the creation of a mixed-use neighborhood, an industrial campus and a waterfront facility for maritime, manufacturing and logistics operations.
