Georgia Ports Authority's Port of Savannah logged a new high for containers moved by rail in 2025, at 545,214.

The achievement marked the fifth consecutive year of more than half a million rail moves at the port, GPA officials said in a press release.

In total, the port handled 5.7 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containerized cargo in 2025, a 2.6% increase over 2024 and its second-highest record.

The port in 2025 also shaved down the average time it takes to move a container from marine vessel to train, from 28 hours to 22 hours.

GPA is undertaking a $4.5 billion port and inland infrastructure project, which when completed will add five new container berths in Savannah and one new roll-on/roll-of berth at the authority's Brunswick port. The authority also plans to open its Blue Ridge Connector inland rail terminal in Gainesville, Georgia, in mid-2026, GPA officials said.

The Port of Savannah has two on-dock rail yards served by CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway.
