The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) will spend $170 million to install 55 hybrid-engine rubber-tired gantry cranes at the Port of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal, the authority announced this week.
The cranes will operate on electric battery power with diesel generators used only to recharge the batteries, GPA officials said in a press release. The hybrid cranes are expected to reduce fuel consumption by 500,000 gallons annually across the terminal’s entire fleet, equal to fuel cost savings of more than $1.6 million.
The cranes also are expected to cut emissions in half compared to conventional diesel cranes.
"These new machines will expand our capabilities, operate at lower cost and leave a smaller carbon footprint than conventional diesel cranes," said GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch.
Ocean Terminal is being redeveloped into an all-container facility. The port authority also plans to build two big-ship berths and improve the paving surface to hold container stacks, enabling the terminal to handle up to six neopanamax vessels simultaneously. To accommodate the extra vessels, the port authority will add eight all-electric ship-to-shore cranes at the terminal by 2026, GPA officials said.
When renovations are completed, the terminal’s annual capacity is projected to reach 2 million 20-foot equivalent units.
CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway serve the port. The Golden Isles Terminal Rail Road provides switching services.
