The Indian railways ministry recently awarded a $127.8 million contract to Siemens Transportation Systems to supply electrical equipment for new multiple-unit trains that will run on Mumbai, India’s Central and Western railways — Siemens’ largest-ever Indian contract, according to a prepared statement.

Siemens will manufacture and deliver electrical equipment for 170 three-car trains. Equipment includes pantographs, transformers, traction and auxiliary power converters, traction motors, train control and passenger information systems. The components will feature two-system capability, enabling trains to operate both on the current DC line voltage and on an AC system scheduled to replace the DC system in the Mumbai region.

The electrical components are scheduled to be delivered during a three-year period to Chennai, India’s Integral Coach Factory, which is building the trains.

Adapted for local climatic and environmental conditions, the electrical systems are designed to reduce energy consumption by 30 percent, and reduce maintenance and repair costs.
