Terminal expansion project slated for Port of Montreal

Logistec Corp. announced yesterday that Termont Montreal Inc. has signed a long-term lease agreement with the Port of Montreal under which Termont will become the future operator of Logistec's Viau container terminal and will invest $42 million (in Canadian dollars) in the initial phase of the terminal's construction.

The redeveloped site will include a full-service berth for container vessels, two post-Panamax cranes, a modern automated truck-marshalling gate, an intermodal service using on-terminal rail operations and a high-density container yard, Logistec officials said in a press release.

In addition to existing business at the Maisonneuve Terminal, Termont will oversee day-to-day activities at the new Viau facility, and provide cargo and container handling, inventory management, and transloading to truck or rail via CN and Canadian Pacific lines.

Construction of the new terminal is slated to get underway this summer and conclude in fall 2016. If container growth continues, Termont plans to invest an additional $30 million toward the project.

When fully operational, the new Viau terminal's handling capacity will be 600,000 TEUs, which would bring the port's total container-handling capacity to 2.1 million TEUs.

Termont Montreal is owned by Logistec Stevedoring Inc., a subsidiary of Logistec Corp.
