West Virginia awards bridge contract for NS intermodal facility

On June 2, Acting West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and West Virginia Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox announced the state awarded a $6.5 million contract to Wayne Concrete Co. Inc. to construct a new bridge on the Tolsia Highway. The bridge will accommodate eastbound traffic along U.S. Route 52 as part of a plan to develop Norfolk Southern Corp.’s Prichard intermodal facility in Wayne County.

The West Virginia DOT has begun work on the initial phase of the intermodal terminal, which will handle container traffic moving westbound between Prichard and Chicago via Columbus, Ohio, along NS’ double-stack Heartland Corridor intermodal route. The facility also will process traffic heading east along the Heartland Corridor to the Port of Virginia in Norfolk.

“The immediate benefits will be felt in terms of construction jobs, and the long-range benefits will be in West Virginia’s dramatically expanded ability to provide intermodal service in support of the trucking and rail industries, which are integral to the economy of our state and nation,” said Tomblin in a prepared statement.
