Yesterday, West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and Secretary of Transportation Paul Mattox announced the state awarded Mountaineer Contractors Inc. a $27.4 million contract to construct the Prichard Intermodal Facility off Route 52 in Wayne County, W.Va.

Slated to open by 2014, the facility will be operated by Norfolk Southern Railway. The terminal is a result of public and private partnerships stemming from NS’ Heartland Corridor project, which was developed to facilitate more efficient intermodal movements between the Norfolk, Va., port region and Midwestern markets in and around Chicago and Columbus, Ohio, said Tomblin in a prepared statement.

“By making the Mountain State more accessible, the Prichard Intermodal Facility will be instrumental in encouraging economic development in the region as well as providing employment opportunities for West Virginians,” he said.

The facility will be funded by a federal $12 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant and monies from the state’s Special Rail and Intermodal Enhancement Fund, said Mattox.
