BART: Economic performance in 2012 results in pay increase for union workers

Bay Area Rapid Transit's (BART) performance in 2012 will result in a 1 percent salary increase for unionized employees, effective July 1, BART officials announced yesterday.

A four-year contract, which expires June 30, allows four of the agency's five unions to receive a 1 percent increase if a set of economic conditions are met. The criteria include increases in sales tax revenue and ridership, an upper limit on increases in pension and medical costs, and the absence of other unanticipated costs.

Those conditions have been satisfied, BART General Manager Grace Crunican said in a prepared statement.

"With record ridership and an aging system, our employees are working hard to provide on-time, reliable service for our riders," she said. "The bar was set high for our employees to receive this increase and the predefined standards were met."

BART employees have received no pay increases the past four years. Workers that will receive the 1 percent increase are represented by the Service Employees International Union Local 1021, Amalgamated Transit Workers Union Local 1555, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3993 and BART Police Officers Association. Some non-represented employees will receive pay increases, as well.

The salary increase announcement came as the agency began new contract negotiations with service employee and transit worker unions.
