Union Pacific Railroad and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) have reached a tentative labor agreement that, if ratified, would provide a general wage increase of 3% to 6,000 BLET members employed at UP.

The raise would be effective Sept. 1. The proposal is intended as an "interim raise" while full contract negotiations continue, BLET officials said in a July 22 press release.

The interim raise would be replaced by the wage increases agreed to in the final contract settlement. If the final agreement includes retroactive pay, the amount paid under the interim deal will not be included in the calculations of retroactive payments, they said.

BLET members' ratification ballots are due Aug. 8.
