Last week, Canadian National Railway Co. and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen announced a majority of 400 union-represented engineers at the Class I’s Illinois Central (IC) properties ratified a five-year agreement.

Effective Jan. 1, the contract increases wages, preserves an hourly rate compensation system CN implemented on its U.S. properties in 2002 (to replace traditional mileage- and rules-based systems), and improves benefits.

The pact “will provide greater workplace stability for both CN and its locomotive engineers on the former IC,” said Gordon Trafton, senior vice president of CN’s U.S. Region, in a prepared statement.

CN’s IC network extends from Chicago to New Orleans, and from Chicago to Omaha, Neb., and Sioux City, Iowa.
