Efforts to negotiate new collective agreements covering Canadian National Railway Co. locomotive engineers and rail traffic controllers will begin within the next few weeks, according to the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC).
About the same time, the union expects to start negotiating a new contract covering Canadian Pacific Railway traffic controllers.
The CN and CPR contracts — which cover a total of more than 2,500 employees — expire on Dec. 31, said the TCRC, which represents more than 15,000 railroad workers in Canada.
"Workers at CN and CP have made it possible for these companies to haul in record profits over the past few years thanks to their efficiency and professionalism," said TCRC President Dan Shewchuk in a prepared statement. "Companies must recognize this and compensate them for their good work."
