Ontario Northland Transportation Commission and the United Steelworkers Union Local 1976 (USW) announced yesterday that 88 percent of members voted in favor of ratifying a new five-year collective bargaining agreement.

Local 1976 USW represents about 100 employees working rail traffic control, customer service and sales, and train operations.

The agreement is an "important step in creating a revitalized" Ontario Northland, union and commission officials said in a joint press release.

"This collective agreement is a result of months of discussions with USW about the future of Ontario Northland and the changes required in order to ensure sustainability," said Corina Moore, interim president and chief executive officer.

"It is always a good indicator when the membership shows such strong support for an agreement," said Ron Marleau, vice president of District 6 for TC Local 1976 of the United Steelworkers. "This five year deal represents stability and security for our members, as well as the company and our customers."
