The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) last week held its first virtual information session aimed at recruiting more women as transit operators, including rail operators.

The event featured TTC women operators and employees — including Rail Transportation Training Manager Dawn Arbeau and Deborah Lyon, the head of streetcar transportation — who spoke about their experiences and discussed career growth opportunities.

The event reached its viewer capacity at 3,000 attendees, so TTC will now host a second virtual event on Dec. 10.

"An important focus for me is making sure our workforce reflects the diverse communities that we serve at the TTC,” said TTC Chief Executive Officer Rick Leary in a press release. “Events like this one are a significant part of how we get there."

In 2019, 16% of employees identified as women, TTC officials said.

"We are looking to improve that statistic by encouraging women throughout the greater Toronto area to explore career opportunities at the TTC,” said TTC Chair Jaye Robinson.
