Union Railroad Co. and the United Transportation Union have reached a tentative agreement covering wages and work rules.

"Contract details will be released after language is perfected and submitted to the membership for ratification," said UTU Vice President Kim Thompson — who assisted in negotiations — in a prepared statement.

The 145-mile Union Railroad serves Pittsburgh-area steel, coal and coking coal customers, and interchanges with CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Corp. and Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Co.

The short line is owned and operated by Transtar Inc., which also controls the 186-mile Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway Co., 84-mile Birmingham Southern Railroad Co., 24-mile Lake Terminal Railroad Co. and 15-mile McKeesport Connecting Railroad Co., as well as Fairfield Southern Co., Warrior & Gulf Navigation Co. and Mobile River Terminal. Transtar is owned by U.S. Steel Corp.
