BNSF Logistics L.L.C. recently obtained a contract to transport one transformer from the Port of New Orleans to a substation near Columbus, Ohio. The 525,800-pound transformer was 32 feet long, 12 feet wide and 16 feet high, so it was unable to be cleared for rail transportation from New Orleans. A third-party logistics (3PL) service provider, BNSF Logistics contracted Ceres Barge to transport the transformer to Mt. Vernon, Ind., where it then could be moved by rail. For the move from New Orleans to Mt. Vernon, BNSF Logistics requested the use of "Big Hope 1," a Ceres-owned barge painted bright pink to promote cancer awareness. The 3PL firm also provided a donation to the Mary Crowley organization, a cancer research center that offers patients access to innovative clinical trials under the oversight of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, BNSF Logistics officials said in a press release."We were pleased to be able to raise cancer awareness and fulfill our goal of being a good corporate citizen in the course of providing our customer with an innovative logistics solution," said BNSF Logistics President Ray Greer.
