The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is accepting public comments on the state’s 2026-2027 freight and rail plan until May 1.
The plan is designed to guide the state’s actions related to freight and rail transportation. It combines the goals of the Kansas long-range transportation plan with the state’s freight and rail plan guidance as well as passenger-rail requirements from key federal agencies, KDOT officials said in a press release.
The plan serves as an update to KDOT’s 2023 state freight plan and 2022 state rail plan. It focuses on safety and security; transportation system management; asset preservation; freight and economic vitality; stewardship; and workforce.
“This plan will include guidance on investment of available funds and recommendations related to projects and priorities that will help [us] meet future freight needs and growth in Kansas,” KDOT officials said.
The Kansas Freight Advisory Committee — which includes key stakeholders across the freight and rail sectors — will meet three times during the development phase to provide feedback and insight. Plan development will continue through 2026, with a final plan to be completed by January 2027.
