Norfolk Southern Corp. recently obtained supply agreements from Dynamic Fuels L.L.C. and Mansfield Oil Co. for renewable diesel. Since early January, the Class I primarily has been using Dynamic Fuels' renewable diesel at a yard in Meridian, Miss. Dynamic Fuels produces renewable and synthetic fuels from animal fats and greases that are designed to reduce emissions of carbons, particulates and nitrous oxides when combusted in existing diesel engines. Managing Editor Jeff Stagl interviews NS Vice President of Operations Planning and Support Gerhard Thelen to gauge how and why the Class I is using renewable diesel, and determine which other alternative fuels and technologies the railroad is evaluating, including fuel produced from coal and a natural gas-powered switcher. |
