The unit is the first of two ordered by DART in a contract option exercised in July 2015. The two units will be identical to the first two Liberty Streetcars delivered to DART in spring 2015, Brookville officials said in a press release.

The Liberty model streetcars include an onboard energy storage system for off-wire operation, an automatic leveling system for station-level boarding and more than 70 percent low-floor area, according to the company.

The four-vehicle fleet will support the Dallas Streetcar's expansion into the Bishop Arts District, with service starting at two stops next month.

The Liberty streetcar is the first off-wire capable streetcar to operate in the United States, Brookville officials said. The unit also earned the Light Rail Transit Association's Global Light Rail Award for Technical Innovation of the Year.

The fourth Dallas-bound Liberty streetcar is in the final stages of assembly at Brookville's Pennsylvania manufacturing facility and is slated for delivery later this summer.

Brookville also has been tapped to build streetcars for Detroit's M-1 Rail, Oklahoma City and Milwaukee.
