Canadian National Railway Co. continues to modernize its locomotive fleet. The Class I recently ordered 40 additional high-horsepower locomotives from Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. (EMD) and secured an option for 50 more units.

CN plans to acquire 40 EMD SD70M-2s in early 2010 and 50 more of the 4,300-horsepower locomotives by 2011. The railroad currently has 75 SD70M-2s in service; 25 additional units will enter service in first-quarter 2009.

The locomotives will be up to 20 percent more fuel efficient than the older units they’re replacing and comply with regulatory emission requirements. The SD70M-2s will feature crew cabs isolated from the frame to reduce noise and vibration, as well as distributed power capability.

The locomotives will help CN improve motive power efficiency and reliability, and enhance customer service, said President and Chief Executive Officer E. Hunter Harrison in a prepared statement.
