Farmrail System Inc. recently augmented and upgraded its locomotive fleet by acquiring five additional GP-38s, bringing the total number of those units in the fleet to 11.
“Increased traffic requiring longer hauls, heavier trains and intensive switching at more widespread locations justifies an active roster of 31 units, including spares,” Farmrail officials said in a news item posted on the company’s web site.
Last year, system train miles increased 17 percent, locomotive unit-miles climbed 25 percent and carloadings rose 8 percent compared with 2010.
Farmrail manages an 82-mile line between Weatherford and Erick, Okla., and an additional 89 miles of track between Westhom and Elmer, Okla., for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. In addition, Farmrail subsidiary Grainbelt Corp. operates a 176-mile line linking Enid and Frederick, Okla. Frederick.
