To cut fuel expenses and encourage workers to reduce diesel usage, The Kansas City Southern Railway Co. (KCSR) is promoting a new Fuel Conservation Incentive Program.

Launched in August, the program is designed to reduce fuel consumption by 10 percent, increase locomotive shutdowns and isolation, and match locomotives to specified tonnages.

KCSR managers measure fuel usage from a minimum of 20 trips and compare the data to average diesel consumption prior to June 2006. Locomotive engineers whose fuel usage is below the average are eligible to participate in a monthly drawing for 24 $100 fuel cards that can be used for personal vehicles. Union Pacific Railroad offers a similar program called Fuel Masters.

In August, KCSR reduced fuel usage by 12 percent and cut the number of total gallons consumed by 819,000 gallons compared with August 2005.
