MBTA puts new Hyundai-Rotem rail cars into service

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) on Wednesday placed three new commuter-rail cars obtained from Hyundai-Rotem USA into passenger service.

The car's inaugural trip was taken on Train No. 213 from North Station to Haverhill. The cars will continue to operate on the North side of the commuter-rail system during the next few weeks, and additional new cars are expected to enter service throughout the system in the coming months, MBTA officials said in a press release.

The cars are the first three of 75 ordered from Hyundai-Rotem USA at a cost of $190 million. Fifteen are slated to be in service by fall.

The bi-level cars feature 55 percent more seating than single-level cars; onboard LED displays showing next station information; designated seating for people with disabilities; and new microprocessor systems controlling air conditioning, doors, communications, brakes and signals.

"We are constantly working to bring our customers better service," said MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott. "These new coaches will do just that; with a cleaner, more informed and more comfortable trip for all aboard."
