The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority's board has approved a $1.5 billion purchase of 378 new R268 subway cars as part of a major fleet modernization investment.

Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. will begin delivering the new cars in fall 2028, with all 378 cars to be delivered by 2030, MTA officials said in a press release.

The new fleet will be similar in spec to the R211 subway cars. Their arrival will allow New York City Transit (NYCT) to retire the last of its aging R68 and R68A cars and transition the entire "B" or lettered division of the subway system to communication-based train control signaling. Signal modernization projects are underway on five B division lines. These signal enhancements will allow NYCT to run more trains more frequently and reliably, said MTA officials.

Funding for the subway cars was dedicated in the MTA's $68 billion, 2025-2029 capital plan. The new cars will feature pre-installed security cameras, more accessible seating, brighter lights and clearer signage.

"These new train cars will make a world of difference for transit riders by forwarding our efforts to provide safe and reliable service while improving the customer experience," said NYCT President Demetrius Crichlow. "And with the addition of CBTC to more parts of the system, we can run faster and more frequent service for riders."
