Modesto and Empire Traction to test RailPower's Green Goat

RailPower Technologies Corp. has lined up another short line to kick the tires on its hybrid switcher. Yesterday, the company announced Modesto and Empire Traction Co. (METRR) will test a Green Kid® locomotive for 30 days in switching and short-haul applications.

A five-mile short line serving the 2,000-acre Beard Industrial District in Modesto, Calif., METRR interchanges with Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific Railroad.

Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and long-life recyclable batteries, 2,000-horsepower Green Goats are designed to reduce NOx and other emissions 50 percent to 80 percent, and fuel use about 50 percent compared with a conventional switcher.

Short lines Pacific Harbor Line Inc. and BNSF subsidiary Los Angeles Junction Railway Co. already have tested Green Goats.
