Metrolinx has signed a CA$109 million contract to refurbish 56 GO Transit bilevel rail cars at the Ontario Northland remanufacturing and repair center in North Bay, Ontario, the two companies announced April 8.

Each car will be overhauled, with structural work and renewed or upgraded parts, including electrical components. Seats will be replaced, washrooms improved and HVAC and door systems upgraded, according to the Metrolinx blog.

"This vehicle refurbishment agreement is an important step in supporting the growth of our future rail capacity," said Metrolinx President and CEO Phil Verster.

The work is expected to begin May 30 and finish by late September 2025. The agreement signed last week is in addition to Metrolinx's 2019 contract with Ontario Northland to refurbish 15 cars.

"Our continued partnership with Metrolinx, specifically for refurbishment projects, confirms our exceptional skillset and reputation for high-quality remanufacturing services right here in North Bay," said Ontario Northland President and CEO Corina Moore.
