Rail-car orders dipped, deliveries climbed in 2Q, ARCI says

In the second quarter, rail-car orders totaled 14,850 compared with 23,901 in the first quarter, according to the American Railway Car Institute Committee (ARCI) of the Railway Supply Institute. Orders totaled 11,066 in fourth-quarter 2012, 15,151 in third-quarter 2012 and 16,434 in second-quarter 2012.

Car deliveries in the second quarter reached 12,511, besting the first quarter's 11,952. Deliveries totaled 11,815 in fourth-quarter 2012, 12,346 in third-quarter 2012 and 17,927 in second-quarter 2012.

Meanwhile, the car backlog as of July 1 stood at 73,706 units compared with 71,704 units on April 1, ARCI data shows. The backlog totaled 60,244 units on Dec. 31, 2012, and 61,400 units on Oct. 1, 2012.
