The Silver Line Rail Yard and Maintenance Facility at Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., has reached substantial completion, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) announced yesterday.
The completion of the 90-acre rail yard, built by contractor Hensel Phelps, will mark a significant milestone for the Silver Line Phase 2 project to extend the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Metrorail system to the airport and further into northern Virginia, MWAA officials said in a press release.
The rail yard will provide space for trains to undergo maintenance and repairs, as well as storage for trains and spare parts. Operational readiness testing will begin soon to demonstrate the rail yard’s functionality, MWAA officials said.
The Phase 2 project’s six stations and mainline tracks built by Capital Rail Constructors were finished in November. Phase 1 of the Silver Line opened in 2014, which extended Metrorail service from East Falls Church to the eastern edge of Reston, prompting major transformations in other areas along the route. Phase 2 is leading to changes in Reston, Herndon and Ashburn as well as at the airport.
The rail yard can store 184 rail cars and is located on airport property along Old Ox Road.
