The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) yesterday named Union Pacific Railroad the 16th winner of the annual Dr. William W. Hay Award at a general session held during its annual meeting in Chicago.
UP earned the award — which recognizes excellence in rail engineering projects — for its intermodal facility in Santa Teresa, N.M., that opened in April. Chosen from among three submissions this year, the terminal met the award criteria: projects that emphasize innovation, safety and/or service performance reliability.
The 2,200-acre Santa Teresa facility enabled UP to consolidate three fueling stations in and around El Paso, Texas, helping to increase train speed and operating efficiency, said Amtrak's Michael Franke, AREMA's treasurer who chairs the Hay award committee, during the award presentation. The project involved 70 construction companies, and there was outstanding communication between all the stakeholders during the project, he said.
AREMA established the award to honor the memory and accomplishments of Dr. William Walter Hay, an association member and leader who was a professional railroader in military transportation service and the freight-rail industry. Hay was a consultant on rail design, construction and operations and, for more than 25 years, was a professor of railway civil engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
