Yesterday, BNSF Railway Co. announced it will spend $199 million this year on track maintenance and rail capacity projects in Texas, and $30 million on similar projects in South Dakota.

The Texas projects include an expansion of rail capacity at Tower 55 in Fort Worth; realignment of a mainline for a runway extension north of Fort Worth; replacement of the Galveston Causeway Bridge; installation of wheel detectors in Galveston; improvements to the Amarillo car shop; and significant signal upgrades for ongoing positive train control (PTC) work.

Through a track maintenance program, BNSF also plans to surface 1,341 miles of track, complete undercutting work, and replace 84 miles of rail and about 563,000 ties.

The South Dakota projects include expanding sidings and upgrading signals and, via a track maintenance program, surfacing 676 miles of track, completing undercutting work, and replacing 28 miles of rail and about 121,000 ties.

The projects in the two states are part of BNSF’s $3.9 billion capital spending program for 2012, which includes $1.1 billion for rolling stock and other equipment acquisitions, $400 million for terminal, line and intermodal expansion work, and $300 million for PTC work.
