The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is accepting applications for project funding through the Georgia Freight Rail Program (GFRP) in fiscal-year 2026-2027. Applications are due June 1.
Funded through the Georgia Locomotive Fuel Tax Program, the GFRP includes the state’s Rail Enhancement, Rail Preservation and Rail Industrial Access programs, GDOT officials said in a press release.
Awarded annually, GFRP funds can be used to acquire, lease or improve railways or railroad equipment, including grade crossings, rolling stock, rights of way or rail facilities (through the Rail Enhancement Program); acquire, lease or improve short lines (through the Rail Preservation Program); or construct, restructure or improve industrial access to railroad tracks and related facilities (through the Rail Industrial Access Program).
Program funding will be awarded to owners and operators of Class Is and short lines in the state at a share of 67% to 33%, respectively. GDOT will consider providing funds for projects that enhance public safety and goods mobility, or improve trade, economic development, air quality or land use.
GDOT expects to announce GFRP funding awards by late October.
