MTA Metro-North Railroad crews on Oct. 9 installed 1,161 ties along the Waterbury Branch, marking the railroad's largest number of ties installed in a single day.

The figure surpassed by two ties the previous record set in 1984 between Brewster and Dover Plains on the Harlem Line.

Last week's record-breaking tie replacement was performed on a continuous outage of single track to the south of Oronoque Road in Milford, Connecticut. Crews were able to install the record number of ties since there was no adjacent track or third rail to inhibit the work. Workers also didn't need to stop installations for passing trains.

"It's impossible to operate the railroad safely and efficiently without well-maintained track, and this work will help keep service running smoothly for our New Haven Line customers," said Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi.
