Based on today's gas prices, a commuter can save more than $670 a month, or $8,000 annually, by taking public transportation instead of driving, according to the American Public Transportation Association's latest Monthly Transit Savings Report.

Savings are based on an average gas price of $3.91 per gallon as reported by AAA. Since 2003, gas prices have increased 180 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
