The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently elected Jim Graham to serve a one-year term as board chairman.
A board member since 1999 representing the District of Columbia, he last served as chairman in 2003. Graham is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia and before the U.S. Supreme Court.
He will succeed outgoing Chairman Christopher Zimmerman, who recently outlined WMATA's accomplishments during the past year. Among them: record ridership, higher on-time performance, deployment of more eight-car trains, a 10 percent reduction in work-related injury claims and zero work-related fatalities.
"In the coming weeks, the board will be reviewing specific performance objectives in detail with the general manager, identifying the areas that still need improvement and establishing new goals for which to strive in he coming year," said Zimmerman in his outgoing remarks.
Meanwhile, the WMATA board also elected Peter Benjamin, a board member representing Maryland, first vice chairman; and Catherine Hudgins, representing Virginia, second vice chairman.
