The Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) continues to move forward with plans to construct an intermodal container transfer facility (ICTF) in Mobile.
 
The $75 million facility, which will take three years to complete, will connect an existing marine terminal with up to five Class Is. The ICTF is the second phase of ASPA’s Choctaw Point project, which also includes a marine container terminal that was completed in October 2008 and a logistics park.

“The intermodal container transfer facility will add much-needed infrastructure to reduce the number of trucks on our highways, eliminating both congestion and emissions,” said ASPA Director and Chief Executive Officer Jimmy Lyons in a prepared statement. “We are actively putting together financing plans for both the transfer facility and the logistics park.”

ASPA, the U.S. Department of Transportation and private-sector sources will fund the ICTF. Preliminary site work is under way and will be completed in June. Site fill work is scheduled to begin in July.
