AAR backs 'transportation efficiency' bill

On Monday, the Association of American Railroads endorsed the Clean, Low-Emission, Affordable New Transportation Efficiency Act of 2009 (H.R. 1329/S. 575), which was introduced by Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) and Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) in March.

The bill seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through investments in “green” transportation projects, including those involving freight-rail capacity, intercity passenger rail and highways. The legislation would establish a Low Greenhouse Gas Transportation Fund to provide appropriations for the projects.

The House Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials, and Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works are considering the measures.
