USDOT seeks applications for 'TIGER II' grant program

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently announced it will accept pre-applications for “TIGER II” grants until July 16. Final applications are due Aug. 23.
The USDOT is authorized to award $600 million in TIGER II discretionary grants through the Fiscal-Year 2010 Appropriations Act. The grants will provide capital assistance to states, local governments and transit agencies for TIFIA financing, capital grants or transportation planning activities, according to the agency.
“This appropriation is similar, but not identical to the appropriation for the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER discretionary grant program, authorized and implemented pursuant to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009,” USDOT officials said in a TIGER II program summary. “Because of the similarity in program structure and objectives, the DOT is referring to the grants for National Infrastructure Investments under the FY2010 Appropriations Act as ‘TIGER II Discretionary Grants.’”
Similar to the TIGER grant program, TIGER II grants will be awarded on a competitive basis for projects that “will have a significant impact on the nation, a metropolitan area or a region,” USDOT officials said in the summary.
