• Portec Rail Products Inc. announced unaudited net income of $457,000 for the first quarter of fiscal-year 2010, vs. unaudited net income of $1.13 million for the same period in fiscal-year 2009.

• MGE Equipamentos e Servicos Ltda., part of Caterpillar Inc.’s Progress Rail Services Division, has reached an agreement to acquire all the capital stock of Zeit Comercio e Montagem de Equipamentos Ltda. Based in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil, Zeit produces automation equipment for locomotives, as well as other electronic equipment.

• Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott L.L.C. announced that railroad litigation attorneys Lawrence Bailey Jr. and Thomas Smith have joined the firm’s White Plains, N.Y. office. Previously, Baliey was a partner at Hodgson Russ L.L.P and Smith was a partner at Kardaras & Kelleher L.L.P.

• The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad is now among the short-line railroads using ShipXpress Inc.’s RailSync operating system. The RailSync system enables A&M employees to access the system from any web-based computer.
