Wisconsin transit authority to seek federal New Starts standing for KRM line

Yesterday, the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Transit Authority voted 7-2 in favor of submitting a New Starts application to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for the proposed Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee (KRM) commuter-rail line.
The authority will seek FTA approval to begin preliminary engineering for the project, according to Eric Lynde, a transportation planner/engineer for the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission.
The proposed $200 million, 33-mile, nine-station KRM line would feature diesel-multiple units (DMUs) operating on existing Canadian Pacific and Union Pacific Railroad track, and connect with a Metra line. DMUs would travel at speeds up to 59 mph between Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha.
In September 2009, the state of Wisconsin formed the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Transit Authority to govern rail and bus service improvements in the three cities.
