• CSX Intermodal will implement APS Technology Group Inc.’s Rail OCR Portal and rail tracking systems at a new intermodal terminal being built in North Baltimore, Ohio. The rail yard automation system is designed to automatically identify container-laden rail cars as they enter and exit a facility, and track rail cars within a facility.

• Railinc Corp. named Robert Simora chief information officer. He will be responsible for Railinc’s data, product development and information systems platforms. Previously, Simora served the company as assistant vice president of product development.

• Wabtec Corp.’s rail unit has received a $37 million contract to overhaul 90 transit cars for DB Regio Tyne & Wear Ltd. The project is expected to conclude in 2015. Work will be completed at Wabtec’s rail facility in Doncaster, England.

• The first phase of the Gautrain system has opened in Johannesburg, South Africa, featuring Bombardier’s Electrostar train. Bombardier produced the fleet of 96 trains in Derby, United Kingdom, and completed final assembly for 81 of the trains in South Africa.

• RAIL.ONE Group has received a contract for the TTY Airport MRT Access System in Taiwan. The company will provide the RHEDA 2000 ballastless track system to link Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to TaiPei’s metro network. Under the contract, RAIL.ONE will deliver 150,000 modified bi-block Type B 355 ties for the 31.1-mile line. The first 40,000 ties are slated to be delivered between July and December. Production of the final 110,000 ties is expected to begin in March 2011.

• The David J. Joseph Co., a Cincinnati, Ohio-based rail-car lessor and logistics provider, marked its 125th anniversary. The company manages one of the largest private rail-car fleets in North America.

• John Barrett, vice chairman of Bowman, Barrett & Associates Inc. (BB&A), received the John Parmer Award from the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI). Barrett is a co-founder of BB&A, and a member of SEAOI and the American Railway Maintenance-of-Way Engineering Association.
