New York gets green light for Moynihan Station project's first phase

On Friday, New York Gov. David Paterson announced that the Public Authorities Control Board approved the first phase for transforming Manhatten’s Farley Federal Post Office into Moynihan Station.
Phase one calls for expanding and enhancing 33rd Street Connector between Penn Station and West End Concourse, which lies under the grand staircase of the Farley building; extending and widening the West End Concourse to serve nine of Penn Station’s 11 platforms; creating new vertical access points and passenger circulation space; and constructing entrances into the West End Concourse through the 31st and 33rd Street corners of the Farley building.
Work is expected to begin in October and be completed in 2016. The first phase’s $267 million budget is being funded jointly by the federal and state governments.
