Québec’s Agence Métropolitaine de Transport (AMT) recently unveiled a new diesel- and electric-powered locomotive that will enable the agency to add more departures and commission the Train de l’Est, AMT officials said in a prepared statement.
The new locomotives are designed to travel anywhere on AMT’s commuter-rail network, increase capacity and help reduce travel times for certain connections by accessing a tunnel under Mount Royal.
AMT had issued a request for proposals jointly with New Jersey Transit and awarded the 20-unit, $236.3 million contract to Bombardier Transport. Seventy-five percent of the project is being financed by the ministére des Transports du Québec, with AMT funding the remaining portion.
