LACMTA rail maintenance facility earns environmental recognition

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) has earned international recognition for an environmental management system (EMS) at the Red and Purple Line subway maintenance facility.

An EMS designation means the facility has met standards set by the independent International Organization for Standardization. The award is the first for a major U.S. rail maintenance facility, LACMTA officials said in a prepared statement.

The award recognizes the authority’s efforts to pursue sustainable practices wherever possible, said Cris Liban, environmental compliance and service manager for LACMTA's Metro system.

The Federal Transit Administration has advocated EMS as a way for transit agencies to demonstrate environmental stewardship and sustainability.
