Yesterday, the Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) named Port of Long Beach Executive Director Richard Steinke the recipient of this year’s Connie Award. He will receive the award at a dinner event to be held Sept. 21 in Long Beach, Calif.
 
The award recognizes individuals who exert a “significant influence” on containerization in world trade and transportation, and display an “innovative spirit” during their careers, according to the institute. Steinke — who has served the port for more than 14 years and plans to retire on Sept. 30 — has been instrumental in developing the port into one of the world's largest container harbors, CII officials said in a prepared statement.
 
Steinke led the port's redevelopment of the former Long Beach Naval Complex into container cargo terminals. He also implemented a green port policy that included a successful clean trucks program in collaboration with the Port of Los Angeles.
 
“Richard Steinke established himself as an indispensable leader of the Port of Long Beach and the international transportation community," said CII President Allen Clifford. "His diligence, attention to detail and vision keep the port among the busiest in the world, and among the most advanced for our imports and exports."
 
During his career, Steinke has served as the chief spokesman for the U.S. West Coast Collaboration; chairman of the American Association of Port Authorities and California Association of Port Authorities; and board member for the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority, Intermodal Container Transfer Facility Joint Powers Authority, Harbor Association of Industry and Commerce, and Intermodal Transportation Institute.
