NS releases third annual sustainability report

Norfolk Southern Corp. recently issued its third annual sustainability report, which is exclusively available for the first time on the Class I's environmental website (www.nssustainability.com).

The 2010 report describes NS’ plans to achieve a new greenhouse-gas emission reduction goal, and reviews economic, environmental and social performance initiatives.

In 2011, the railroad plans to focus on four priorities. Chief among them: working toward a five-year goal to reduce emissions 10 percent per revenue ton-mile compared with 2009, said Blair Wimbush, NS vice president of real estate and corporate sustainability officer, in a prepared statement. NS also plans to improve energy efficiency in company-owned facilities, encourage employee recycling and promote other sustainability programs.

Applying locomotive technology and operating systems, and realizing environmental benefits from public-private partnerships will help NS achieve its sustainability goals, said Wimbush.
